After confirming that Natsuhara-san didn’t get into any trouble (she gave me a signal by waving at me from her room), I went on my way home.

I walked home slowly while thinking about the event that had just transpired. When I reached the Yamaoka family’s house, I saw the front gate was filled with people for some reason.

    “Huh? The police?”

There was a police car with its red light flashing parked nearby.

In front of the entrance of the house, I could see Aunt Yamaoka talking with a policeman. She had a serious look on her face and her behavior seemed restless.

I was curious about what was going on, but since I didn’t want to disturb them, I just walked through the front gate quietly. Both Aunt Yamaoka and the policeman didn’t seem to notice me.

    “Um, what happened?”

In the end, I decided to ask what happened. Aunt Yamaoka looked at me when she heard my voice.

    “Ah!!”

She let out a scream and grabbed both my shoulders vigorously.

    “Yuuma! Where have you been?!”

    “Huh?”

There was a whimper mixed into her voice this time and I could see her tearing up.

    Oh no, I’m in trouble…

“Could it be?” The policeman tilted his head with an exasperated expression.

    “He’s your runaway son?”

    “Huh? Runaway? Me?”

I reflexively repeated his words. The police looked taken aback by my response. Meanwhile Aunt Yamaoka’s face reddened as she bowed her head.

“Y-Yes, um…he stormed out the house a while ago and since this is the first time that this happened, me and my husband didn’t know what to do. Sorry for disturbing you this late at night…”
